Do not say to yourself, "My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth." (verse 17)
Why is it so easy to fall into the trap of forgetting God and taking all the credit for ourselves when things are going well? Granted, when times are tough and trials surround us, we quickly turn to God and pray for divine help to save us. Then we find, usually sooner rather than later, that things work out and our prayers are answered.
Yet, how quickly we forget. As I get older, I find it easier to forget the simple things. Like, what was it that I went to the kitchen for? My wife Angie and I often ask each other, what’s the name of that person we talked to at the drugstore?
No wonder then that it’s easy to put God aside and think that we are the ones responsible for the good things that happen in our lives. But just as God taught the people of Israel as they wandered in the wilderness that “one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord,” (verse 3) so God is teaching us to remember with thanks.
Thank you, gracious God, for all your benefits to us and all your children, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. — HF
