The Bread That Satisfies

One of the true delights in life is the smell of freshly baked bread as it first comes out of the oven with the steam still rising off the loaves. The aroma fills us with the anticipation of satisfying our hunger.

It seems like every culture has its culinary foundation in the staple of the bread of life, around which the main recipes of our kitchens are built. But when Jesus told the crowds who were following him that he was the bread of life who would satisfy their hunger, he was speaking of spiritual truths, not simply physical appetites.

Today, we hunger for the Bread of Life. In a world filled with accusations of fake news and implied guilt based on association and innuendo, we turn to the truth that Jesus brings to our hearts. It is in Jesus that our inner hunger can be satisfied and our lives empowered by Jesus’ spirit of love, both for God and for those in need of food, both physical and spiritual.

God, feed us with Jesus, your bread of life, and use us to invite those who hunger to your never-ending feast of love. Amen. — HF
