Seeing Beyond

It must be incredibly difficult to be in the public eye. To be famous, to be a celebrity and to be in front of the camera must at times raise one’s anxiety level. The applause, the accolades and the attention can certainly bring fame and rewards. However, all that can change in the blink of an eye. Media scrums can instantly appear when someone steps out of bounds, makes a mistake and gets caught in the act. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

In today’s reading, the great King David doesn’t go where he’s supposed to, but goes where he’s not. Instead of going into battle where kings are expected in springtime, he decides to stay at home in Jerusalem. While at home, he happens to notice the girl next door, Bathsheba, and the rest of the story is all too familiar. Except this is not the rest of the story. God, who has wholeheartedly loved David since the beginning, continues to love him still. All throughout scripture, there is evidence that God sees beyond our fumblings and failures. After all, God’s word is a love letter for all time and all people.

Compassionate God, thank you for seeing beyond my shortcomings and loving me. Amen. — LW
