I’ll Push You

Justin Skeesuck wanted to attempt a 500-mile pilgrimage route in Spain. Known as the El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James), this is a pathway that many have walked. However, due to a rare neurological disease, Justin needs to be in a wheelchair. He shared his dream with his long-time friend, Patrick Gray. Patrick’s immediate response was that he would push him. It took them 35 days. The pathway led them over hills and mountains, through deserts and valleys. There were some sections that were too difficult for Patrick to push his friend by himself. It was then that others along the way pitched in. For Justin to complete this journey, it took his friend and others to give of themselves.

Today is the Feast of St. James the Elder, patron saint of Spain and often identified as Santiago. James and his brother John had a dream. They wanted to make reservations in heaven. They wanted to sit with Jesus, one on either side of him. However, this bold move was turned upside down by Jesus and led to a teachable moment. Rather than putting yourself first, move others into that position. It’s the way of Jesus.

Loving God, please help me today to be a servant more like Jesus. Amen. — LW
