Monday July 23rd, 2018 Jeremiah 50:1-7
They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, and they shall come and join themselves to the LORD by an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten. (verse 5)
There are warranties for just about everything nowadays. Toasters, cell phones, cars and much, much more come with promises and guarantees. However, all too often when something goes wrong, we discover that there are limits to what fits under the warranty. We’re told to read the fine print. Have you ever had an experience like that? There doesn’t appear to be anything that comes with an unlimited guarantee. Except?
The prophet Jeremiah describes a time in the history of the Israelites when they have been whisked away from their homeland. While living in exile in Babylon, there must have been long stretches of wondering if they would ever see home again. As God’s mouthpiece, Jeremiah reminds them that they will indeed head home. God has made a promise with them from the very beginning that God will never forget them. God will always be with them. God has made an everlasting covenant. Guaranteed! No fine print.
And this story continues to unfold further down the line. God’s promise still lives on.
God of rainbows and promises, help us to live each day with the guarantee that you are always with us. Amen. — LW
