Adoption

In his excellent children’s book We Belong Together, kids’ author Todd Parr writes a simple but moving story about adoption. In a touching and loving way, Parr explains to children why they were adopted by their parents. The children have needs: to grow healthy and strong, to have someone help them when they are hurt, to learn, to hear stories and be loved. For each of their needs, the parents assure the children that they have the resources to help, such as kisses for boo-boos. The overarching theme is togetherness; child and parent grow, walk, discover and love together, forming a family. It is truly a wonderful story.

This is our adoption story. God adopted us through Jesus, sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts, and we became part of a new family. This family isn’t connected by blood or genetics; it’s connected by the Holy Spirit and love. God is whispering to us, “We belong together because?you need someone to love you and I have love to give. Now you have all the love you will ever need.”

Lord, thank you for adopting me into your family. Amen. — EP
