Friday July 6th, 2018 Psalm 48
Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God. His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth. (verses 1-2)
I sometimes think about my dream house. It would have a large kitchen, bedrooms for all of us plus a spare, space for us to have our own hobbies, and a lovely garden. It would reflect our love of quirky things, yet be tranquil and a haven. Everyone would keep it tidy, and no one would have to be nagged to mow the lawn. Above all, I would have a place where my family could be happy and safe from anything that might happen.
Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? However, people don’t really live like that and besides, my dream house wouldn’t be what my children would want. But the city described in this psalm sounds idyllic because the Lord dwells there, too. The psalmist goes further than saying the place belongs to God; God is the fortified city in the mountains, a place where their enemies flee rather than attack such a formidable stronghold. We are encouraged to see God as such a stronghold, a place where we are safe and protected from all that we fear.
God, our stronghold, help us to turn to you in times of trial and uncertainty. Be there when we need comfort and protection. Amen. — ERP
