Peace, Be Still!

This is not your idyllic summer scene. That one has us canoeing down a quiet stream or water skiing behind a fast boat. But as scripture and life attest, sudden storms can happen even during what are supposed to be relaxing times.

The seas around us can be stormy and Jesus doesn’t seem to be active and caring in our lives. It feels like he’s got his head down and couldn’t care less. Maybe, though, putting our head on the cushion actually shows caring.

I worked in a counseling office with folks facing crises of one sort or another. Experience taught me what they need most is not advice but calm. We have within ourselves the capacity to bring peace to our environment though the crisis has challenged that. It is kind of like turning to an unruffled family sage who’s been through it all. One calmed my storm simply saying, “We’ve had that in our family, too.”

Lord, help us to lay our head on the cushion with you and to trust that in you we can find peace in every situation because you have blessed us with a hope that can't be shaken away from us and have blessed us with gifts that can stifle any storm. Amen. — EB
