So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. (verse 16)
It’s nothing new. The church in every time and every space has been questioned about its relevance in culture; during the time after Jesus’ ascension, during the time of the Reformation, during times of war and even right now. What is the church’s role in a society that is rapidly changing and will continue to change?
While the world continues to change, the Christian message has not. It is a message that is constantly being renewed and reinvigorated day by day in all of us. That message is one of unconditional love and grace for all people. That message is one of justice and peace for all nations. That message is to love as we have first been loved. That message is Christ coming to us and the world again and again through the Holy Spirit so that we will not lose heart. We can trust that God is very much alive and active in a changing world, and that is good news we can share in this time and this place.
Steadfast God, continue to renew our inner nature to meet the changing world around us so that we may never lose heart in you and your love for us. Amen. — TLR
