I work for the Sabbath

Is Sunday the only Sabbath day? Traditionally, Sunday became Sabbath as a day of rest from the week of work. However, for many other faith traditions, Sabbath can be a Friday or a Saturday. Why are we, as Christians, so tied to Sunday? After all, the world does not stop for our Sunday Sabbath.

Given that Sundays may no longer be a day of rest for the masses, we, as people of faith, are called to live into the sabbath every day of the week. We are called to find time to rest and be nurtured in prayer with God, to let go of the work list or honey-do lists and sit in the presence of God and be renewed. In the sabbath time of rejuvenation, regardless of the day of the week we rest, we are better able to hear the cry of our neighbour for release, and sabbath invites us to walk with them. In the rest from busy schedules, we hear sabbath inviting us to be hope for the downtrodden, love for the outcast, hands and feet that walk the sabbath way of ministry, so where Christ goes, we follow.

Rejuvenating God, give us the rest we need to be an active sabbath people for the world. Amen. — TLR
