Monday March 26th, 2018 Isaiah 42:1-9
Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. (verse 1)
My father recently gave me a pocket-sized prayer book which had belonged to his mother as a child. She had arrived in Canada from Ukraine with only the clothes that she was wearing, her passport, five dollars and this book.
Looking at it, I recalled the many challenges which Baba had endured throughout the course of her life. Her school had been turned into a military barracks when she was only seven years old. She had crossed the Atlantic Ocean alone by ship to begin a new life in a country where she did not speak the language. Upon reaching the Canadian prairies, she and Gido lost their first homestead because of the Great Depression. In the midst of these and many other difficult times, Baba had turned to the word of God to provide her and her family with hope and consolation.
In the midst of the Babylonian exile, life looked bleak to the people of Israel. The prophet Isaiah proclaimed the good news that God would never forsake them. Even in the midst of our greatest challenges, God is at work, restoring us to be a blessing.
Everlasting God, thank you for your faithfulness to all generations. Amen. — KLS
