A friend of mine will retire in 2020. He plans to share some of the fruit of his hard-earned labour with his children and grandchildren. This did not come as a surprise to me. His unselfish actions were quite noticeable on numerous occasions.
Our world often presents a different picture of human nature. There is a tendency to cling to the fruits of our labour. Sharing can be seen as decreasing our own resources. Giving up some of what belongs to us might be viewed as limiting what is available to us, which can hurt us in the long term. Dispensing of what rightly belongs to us is never easy.
To hear that Jesus emptied himself and took the form of a slave is very humbling. What a model for life. To step out and step away from that which we think shapes our destiny and embodies who we really are can be an uphill task. Jesus became one of us to be with us and to die for us. He showed us selflessness by service and his ultimate sacrifice.
A hallmark of this life is the time shared and the concern and care shown to those in need of companionship.
Dear God, guide us to the places and the people where your presence is needed the most. Amen. — MP
