Friday March 16th, 2018 Psalm 51:1-12
You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. (verse 6)
Psalm 51 is known as the Prayer for Cleansing and Pardon, an excellent choice for this time of Lent. We know this season in the church year, this time when we are called to be solemn, reverent and reflecting on our sinfulness. (Which I affectionately refer to as the season of “we’re really not all that and a bag of chips!”)
Sometimes, we act as though we believe we are big deals, hustling and bustling from here to there, too busy being busy. Well, Lent stops us in our tracks. Lent throws up the mirror and says, “Hey you, it’s time! Annual cleansing of the soul season!”
We can only deceive the secret heart for so long. The longings, the desires, the urges, the habits, the addictions, all that chains us from being truthful to the deepest part of our inward being. The place where wisdom joins the soul, where only you and the Divine exist.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. (verse 12) Amen. — LP
