Never Again!

I have a special affinity for biblical texts that show God’s willingness to change God’s mind. The flood destroys the earth and all life on it. But then God declares, “Never again!” And God sets a rainbow in the sky as a sign, a reminder, of a promise always to be kept.

We, too, can change our minds. Whatever we have said, thought, felt or done that has disrespected or displeased God or neighbours, we are free and welcome to confess, repent and then be forgiven. God waits and longs for us to decide never again will we commit that sin.

Forgiven, we are free to begin again with new understanding, new determination and new hope, knowing God is right there with us.

Gracious God, your patience and forgiveness are extravagantly generous. Strengthen us to name and claim our sin, to repent and start again with hope and determination, forgiven and deeply loved. Amen. — SB
