Summoning the Earth

I love summer storms. There is something majestic about watching the force of nature transform the earth and sky. I remember one storm that I watched come in over the lake at Bible camp. I was sitting on the deck with a young girl from my cabin. We were watching the transformation of the sky from a peaceful summer day to a wild and stormy night. She was a foster child. She shared her story with me. I remember thinking in those moments, that nature itself was testifying to the storms this young girl had endured in her short life. Yet she had a calmness about her. She understood that from the storms of her life, God’s light would shine forth. She was anchored in love.

The next morning our group found a cluster of trees that had all fallen in the storm. She found the two that stayed standing. Their roots were intertwined deeply and they held each other up through the storm. She taught me that this is how faith works. We anchor and intertwine our roots in the love of God, and we will remain standing through any storms that life brings.

Dear Lord, the storms of life can shake us to our core. Help us to remain rooted in your never-failing love. Amen. — VB
