Baptism

When Jesus was baptized, God sent the Holy Spirit upon him. We, too, receive the Holy Spirit when we are baptized. Because most of us were baptized when we were infants, it may not be until we are in Sunday school that we learn that the Holy Spirit is within us.

The Holy Spirit helps us to live the way God wants us to live. For example, the Spirit helps us decide what to say when someone is doing something wrong and trying to justify it. The Spirit also opens our eyes to recognize people in need and moves us to reach out to help them.

The Holy Spirit helps us to live the life that God wants us to live. This might not always be an easy life for us, depending on where we live and in what circumstances. Yet with the help of God’s Holy Spirit, we will succeed. And when we do, we will hear those most blessed words, “You are my beloved child, with whom I am well pleased.” Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Gracious and loving God, please help me live as someone with whom you are well-pleased. Amen. — ES
