Saturday January 6th, 2018 Epiphany of Our Lord Matthew 2:1-12
When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. (verse 10)
As I sit here on this hot July day thinking about the visit of the Wise Men to the baby Jesus, I realize that this is the kind of heat that Mary and Joseph lived in and how they had to watch that the baby Jesus was not overheated.
The Wise Men were anxious to meet the Christ child. Although they were following the star, they stopped to get directions from Herod. After that visit, God warned them not to go back to Herod, for he did not want to worship the child but to kill him. The king had questioned all in authority about this child and was well aware that this child was very special, and he perceived him to be a threat to his reign.
The Wise Men found the Christ child, worshipped him, and gave him the gifts they had brought: myrrh, incense and gold. Then they left by another route so that Herod could not find him. They realized that the baby was the son of God and did what they could to protect him.
Gracious and loving God, we thank you that these three men were so protective of Jesus. May we follow their example. Amen. — ES
