Thursday December 14th, 2017 Isaiah 61:1-4,8-11
The LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news? (verse 1)
She came to make copies of her resum‚. With them in hand she made many calls to look for work. She left a copy with each potential employer; they would let her know if she met their need.
Isaiah has laid out a job description for the leader of God’s people. It reads like a constitution for a whole new order. He touches base on the needs of people and holds out promise that it will one day come to be. On that day, when a leader is found who matches the task at hand, God will choose and anoint him.
When Jesus is about thirty years of age, he visits his hometown of Nazareth. It was customary that a lay person read from the scriptures. The text for that day is this word from the prophet Isaiah. Then he declares that he is the one God has chosen and anointed for the task at hand.
May we celebrate Christmas this year with the conviction and the certainty that Jesus is the promised one who brings peace and hope to our world. Celebrate and sing those songs that lift him up as our Saviour and our Lord.
Thank you, God, that you have kept your promise. May Jesus continue to build his kingdom on earth for the sake of all people in the world. Amen. — SN
