Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (verse 8)
I watched a pretty gripping war movie on the weekend. Although the award contender was fabulous, I found myself covering my eyes with a pillow, dropping popcorn and reaching for tissues to dry my tears. When the film was over, my friend graciously suggested we binge watch Disney, so that I could fall asleep later with thoughts of happy songs and dancing.
Sometimes “changing the channel” is necessary to refocus our minds onto the miracles and blessings that surround us. What we think determines the direction of our lives. In this passage, Paul encourages us to focus on the promises of God’s word. As temples of the Holy Spirit, we can live God’s light when we are filled up with promises of love, peace, provision, safety and hope-truly a happily ever after.
Heavenly Father, thank you for filling my heart with your promises and my mind with gratitude. Amen. — LMB
