But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (verse 9)
I ballroom dance. I recently performed a lindy hop routine that people said was very “me.” That comment made me laugh because the full-on energy and smiling are exactly what you would expect of a Grade One teacher.
More importantly, who does God say that I am? As followers of Christ, we take on a new identity-his identity. Everything Jesus is, we become. The joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Therefore, we receive joy in all circumstances. Jesus is an overcomer, and as a result, we are called to rise up in his power (1 John 4:4). Jesus is more than a conqueror, therefore we are called in his victory (Romans 8:37).
I find that the “I am” statements in the Bible give me great confidence in not just “who” but “whose” I am. As we meditate on the word of God, we see the wonderful plans God has for us. We will discover who we really are and in doing so, unlock our true potential.
Shaping God, thank you for loving me and calling me. I receive your promises and am excited to let go of the old labels and live by your plans. Amen. — LMB
