Humble Thyself

Moses has asked everyone to sit down for his evening pep talk. This will be another important session as Moses knows his time with the Israelites is coming to an end. The Promised Land is near.

Moses says, “So, listen up! God has provided all that we have needed for our long journey, and God promises everything in abundance for us in this new land. Now don’t get too comfortable there, and don’t think that your abundance and comfort is of your own doing. Don’t exalt yourself above others, but remain faithful and humble and filled with gratitude for your Lord God.”

Perhaps we all need to read and reflect upon the words of God that were spoken through Moses. Do we feel that we are self-sufficient, don’t need anyone’s help, don’t need to pray, or don’t need to give thanks to our creator God? Well, God comes to the weak and the strong, to the poor and the rich with gifts. All God asks of us is that we be open to receive those gifts, and from our abundance, to share with those in need.

Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, help us always to humble ourselves, so that we might not exalt ourselves above others or even you, by forgetting that it is you who gives us our life, our breath and our being. Amen. — DS
