Peter’s Special Rock

Have you ever wondered why so many famous cathedrals are named St. Peter’s? Here is the answer; Jesus promised Peter that he would build his church on Peter’s rock. A very special promise and one that is very important in the history of the Christian church.

We like to think of all of our churches as having solid foundations. A rock provides this solid foundation. Here, Jesus is promising his church will be built on this rock and will be rock solid forever. Even “the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.”

Many of us have seen our local churches go through difficult times. Sometimes the difficulties relate to money, sometimes to personalities within the congregation, sometimes to lack of people willing to give of themselves and their time to run programs and care for the congregation both spiritually and physically. Some have even seen their local church close. This is tough, but it is important to remember that Christ’s larger church is still rock solid. As long as we continue to claim Christ as the Messiah, the rock will hold.

God of sure promises, thank you for promising your church will stand no matter what hard times we are experiencing. Amen. — KIGN
