Friday August 25th, 2017 Psalm 124
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side? (verse 2)
Check six is a military term used to keep watch on what might be happening behind a group of soldiers on a patrol. The last position in an order of march or in a flight of aircraft is referred to as “tail-end Charlie.” It is a stressful position to be in, ensuring the safety of others from an unprotected angle. It comes into everyday language in the expression, “I’ve got your back,” meaning a reassurance of support to a friend or colleague.
Israel’s song of thanksgiving to the Lord, “if it had not been the Lord who was on our side,” is an expression of relief at having been delivered from an aggressive enemy. “The Lord had our back!” would be a modern paraphrase. It was not just a stronger ally that Israel had, it was the Lord of Hosts-there is no stronger ally!
Every day, we face a variety of struggles and challenges. Some are easy, while others are not. Yet, God is always on our side. Remembering daily to give thanks for God’s support and steadfast love is an important prayer to offer and one that is never uncertain.
Steadfast God, thank you that you watch over us and keep us in your grace. Amen. — MHM
