Beyond Ordinary

I am an ordinary woman, a single mother of several children. My partner left years ago, left us for another woman, left me without child support and without many options for employment because I only have a grade eight education. We live in the barrio in Lima, Peru, in a humble home, living day to day with whatever work I can find. We do the best we can, we get by.

So I look to her. She stands about 50 feet tall, towering over the traffic below. A sign of welcome, peace and hope, a mere one kilometer from the Jorge Chavez International Airport in Callao, Peru. Wearing a sky-blue garment, long flowing hair, a star atop the crown sitting on her head, cradling a baby, a loving expression on her face, embodying dignity, grace, sacrifice and a love that commits to serving God faithfully. Mary is an ordinary woman, but God’s plans for her are beyond ordinary.

God of the ordinary, you call us just as we are, and you empower us to follow your call. May we respond with the same faith as Mary. Amen. — FS
