My husband Ed is a wonderful storyteller. His stories are always true, usually very funny, and most of the time have a teaching imbedded in them. Many of them I have heard more than once. Okay, more than two or three or four times. But honestly, I don’t mind. I like his stories. They draw me in; they sound funny even though I know the next line. Through his stories, I have gotten to know him and understand him.
The psalm writer is encouraging us all to be storytellers. We are called to tell our true stories about our life as followers of Jesus and lives lived embraced by God’s love and kindness. We don’t need to be biblical scholars. We don’t need to use fancy, difficult words. We are called to be witnesses with down-to-earth language that does not make us or our hearers uncomfortable, and to tell others about our experiences as beloved children of our loving God. We can do that!
Loving God, we thank you for your faithful and active presence in our lives. Please give us words and courage to tell others about our experiences as followers of Jesus. It is a wonderful adventure. We have a lot to talk about. Help us to put it to words. Amen. — ES
