Watered Fields

The Israelites, together with the prophet Isaiah, are in exile in Babylon, where they long for home. God speaks a word of encouragement to the people through the prophet, telling them that the promises of God are trustworthy and as real as the results of rain and snow on planted fields. They are promised a future with joy. It is as sure as the seed that sprouts.

It is July and farmers have planted their crops and gardeners the vegetable and flower seeds; we have had snow and rain, and in most places the seed will have sprouted and begun to grow. Each seed bears fruit as the seed that was planted.

As the seed that is planted and watered and cared for bears fruit, so does the Word planted into our lives and that of our children and grandchildren. God’s Word always bears fruit. If you ever doubt that, look around you at the watered fields and gardens.

Lord God, when we become discouraged, help us to remember the seed that sprouts in the darkness of the soil, sending out leaves and stalks that bear fruit. Help us to be like the seed, bearing fruit for your kingdom. Amen. — REJ
