A Relationship

One of the best things about being a grandparent is the way we develop a relationship with our grandchildren. It seems that the more time we spend with them in various activities and sharing our lives with them, the deeper the relationship becomes, even when we occupy ourselves by enacting various scenes from the Bible with them. They know us and we know them because we allow each other into our lives on a very personal level.

Jesus also had a very personal relationship with his disciples, and it may be noted in this lesson that he was asking for some very personal responses regarding his identity. It seems that Jesus was using the question to show them that the anticipated Messiah wasn’t the same as the actual Messiah before them.

That can happen to us also if we forget who Jesus is compared to who Jesus might be for many others. To some Jesus is just a historical person, or maybe a teacher of wisdom. To Jesus’ followers though, we are invited to be in a deeply personal relationship with him. Those who spend time with Jesus are those who will know him best and truly understand his identity.

Wonderful Lord, help me to develop a deeper relationship with you, so that I may always feel your presence near me. Amen. — LGR
