Friday June 23rd, 2017 Romans 6:1-11
Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. (verse 4)
Commemorating baptismal anniversaries has recently become popular. There are many ways to celebrate: looking at photos, re-lighting our baptismal candle, taking part in a water-related activity, or placing flowers in our congregation. However, when Paul reminds us to remember our baptism, he isn’t suggesting we serve white frosted cupcakes for dessert once a year! Paul is urging baptized believers to live in the world as they are now, not as they used to be.
Most of us can remember a time when a parent or grandparent gave us the gentle reminder that “You know better than that,” or “That isn’t like you.” Hearing those words as a child sometimes stung more than any other consequence.
Through baptism, we are connected with Christ and promised a new life. Eternal life starts now, as Christ works through us to bless the world around us. Baptism isn’t just a past event in our lives. Being baptized is something that we can celebrate-and live out-every single day, not just once a year!
Forgiving God, we rejoice in Christ's victory over sin and death. Thank you for the fresh start that each new day brings. Amen. — KLS
