Strong and Courageous

From the moment Bethany Hamilton caught her first wave, she knew she wanted to be a professional surfer. A few months after her 13th birthday, Bethany was surfing with some friends when a 14-foot tiger shark attacked her, ripping her left arm off just below the shoulder.

Instead of dwelling on the past, Bethany asked God to guide her into the future and to strengthen her for the hard road ahead. She taught herself to surf with only one arm. Five years later, Bethany was competing full-time on the professional circuit against the world’s best female surfers.

Before Moses died, Joshua was chosen to lead God’s people into Canaan. Joshua and Bethany both knew that they could trust God to remain with them, no matter what. God has made that same promise to each one of us.

God’s people are not exempt from tough times. Marriages end in divorce. We struggle with financial worries. A tragic accident or a difficult diagnosis catches us by surprise. We may not always know what lies ahead for us, but we do know that we never have to journey alone.

Faithful God, you neither fail nor forsake us. Give us courage to trust you in all circumstances. Amen. — KLS
