Worship Buffet

I find it somewhat ironic that my writing assignment for Eternity for Today includes preparing two devotions based on psalms. My least favourite part of worship is when we chant the appointed psalm for the day. I’m not a great singer and chanting is not my preferred style of music. It’s not that I don’t like The Psalms. There are many psalms which encourage me in my daily life and others which help me to praise God.

During worship, I often feel most connected to God during the prayers, the sharing of the peace and the blessings. (Of course, my husband’s sermons are also a highlight!)

Are there parts of worship that you don’t enjoy? Can you identify the parts of worship that are most meaningful to you?

When we eat at a buffet, we might not like everything, but we know that other people enjoy those foods. Our worship services are a bit like a buffet. It’s important that everyone feels welcomed and nourished. We can help by participating in traditional elements and by embracing new worship styles.

Gracious God, help me to remember that worship services are not all about me. Teach me to gladly worship you in varied ways so that others may also be fed. Amen. — JW
