I Can Do That!

It’s easy to read this passage and say, “I can’t do that.” It’s comfortable to assume that pastors and missionaries are taking care of Jesus’ great commission.

When Jesus told the disciples to go to all nations, they had a much smaller view of the world than we have today. I invite you to draw a small circle, and write your name in the circle. Draw a larger circle around the small circle. In the larger circle, write the names of people whom you encounter on a daily or weekly basis. Add a third circle, and write the names of people with whom you connect on a monthly or yearly basis. In a final circle, write the names of nations or groups of people who aren’t part of your personal life.

Look at the names in the circles and ponder these questions: Can you tell someone that he or she is precious to God? Can you offer forgiveness to someone? Can you invite a child or an adult to learn more about baptism? Can you support the work of pastors, seminaries and missionaries with your prayers or financial gifts? Can you contact someone who hasn’t attended worship for awhile?

Lord, show me ways in which I can help to make disciples. Amen. — JW
