"Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink." (verses 37-38)
Journey’s hit song “Don’t Stop Believing” has become a mainstay in popular music and karaoke culture. In the song, the small-town girl and the city boy don’t lose sight of their dreams. Connection awaits them, somewhere, and they keep looking. Don’t stop believing is the cry; keep searching for that connection. Hold on to it. Belief keeps these people confident about what awaits them.
We all thirst for connection, and like the people in the song, many of us go to great lengths looking for it. The kind of connection Jesus offers is greater than any other. Our thirst for meaning and purpose in our lives can only be quenched by Jesus. The author of John’s gospel offers the purpose of the book: “?so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31) It was true when John’s gospel was first recorded and it is still true today: the life that really is life happens in and through Jesus Christ. So come to Christ’s fountain and drink. Don’t stop believing that this connection is yours, both now and in the life to come.
I am thirsty, O God. Lead me to your fountain. Amen. — ANS
