Friday June 2nd, 2017 Psalm 104:24-35
There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it. These all look to you to give them their food in due season?when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. (verses 26-28)
“Oh Lord, oooh you are so big. So absolutely huge. Gosh, we’re all really impressed down here I can tell you. But you are so strong and, well, just so super. Fantastic. Amen.” (Michael Palin as the chaplain in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life)
These words are spoken with overblown sincerity but echo the challenge of praise for God. It’s satire that cuts a little too close to the bone. Who among us hasn’t used a formal prayer voice? Is there a point where the voice goes too far?
It is a challenge to find words to express the wonder of life, the wonder of breath, the wonder of warm streams and spring growth. How do we look at creation and try to put into words the experience of seeing such a complex wonder?
Well maybe it’s time to get outside today or this weekend. To feel the sun, rain, wind, heat, cold of creation and then find words because “Gosh, we’re all really impressed down here I can tell you.”
Creating God, make us open to the wonder of creation. Help us to see with fresh eyes and wonder at all that is around us. Amen. — SB
