Last September 23, I planned a campfire night with Luther College and Campion College campus ministries. The weather worked out well, the drivers were organized, the hotdogs and s’mores were bought. At the very last moment, 15 Mexican students from the international centre joined us.
Chaos: finding more drivers and making sure we had enough food. Then peace: we arrived and all the students headed out for a walk around the ravine. They saw fall in all its splendour and for some, their first real red barn.
Then food around the fire, conversation, stories. Songs in Spanish and English were sung and we revelled to discover such a bond of friendship. I told one of my campfire stories about God’s love for everybody and late into the evening we chatted.
Canada is such a unique place in the world. We are rich in diversity, which helps us understand who we are through the eyes of others.
How are you engaging in the diversity that God has given?
God of the nations, we give you thanks for the ways that your image is reflected in humanity, and for the diversity of people in our world. Help us to trust in your love and confidently reach out to other people to be surprised by community, love and joy wherever we may find it. Amen. — SB
