Monday May 29th, 2017 1 Samuel 2:4-5
"The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn." (verses 4,5)
The reversal of fortunes. The nature of God to surprise. We live in systems that are forever changing and forever needing change. Right when one form of justice is established it begins to decay, and new work is discovered. Those who first heard our Bible verse today were struggling with many of the same political issues we face today. How much do we leave to freedom of choice and how much do we turn into law? How strong do we need to be to defend ourselves? Where do we need to be a blessing to other nations? Do we need to give up our own authority and autonomy for safety?
Hannah’s prayer reminds us that for thousands of years humanity has struggled with this. But we have never struggled alone. God is with us in the wrestling, and as Christians we can rest confident in the promise that new life, resurrection and healing will always win.
God of true power, inspire me to speak truth to power, to be wise in my political engagement and to look for guidance and wisdom from you. Let your Spirit guide me. Amen. — SB
