Sunday May 28th, 2017 7th Sunday of Easter John 17:1-11
"Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one." (verse 11)
As a chaplain at Luther College at the University of Regina, I deal with students who are struggling with managing all that has been given to them. At the beginning of each semester a course outline and syllabus is given, the boundaries of the work established. In the end, knowing 50% of what was given to you is good enough to pass.
With a simple assignment it is possible to pull off a perfect score, but it is essentially unheard of to get 100% in a course. Life is learning and learning leaves room to improve so we grade and encourage everyone to do their best. We muddle and struggle, plan and experiment our way through it all.
As Jesus prays this prayer we can look at it as Jesus handing in the final assignment. It appears that Jesus got 100%! Everything given to Jesus is brought in. Jesus leaves this powerful prayer for us and it is complete. 100%. Nothing lost; all is done. So we live and learn and love. Thanks be to God.
Loving Jesus, I thank you for getting 100% on my behalf. Inspire me with your promised Spirit to muddle and struggle, plan and experiment my way through life so that your will be done. Amen. — SB
