"?so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." (verse 49)
My five-year-old son’s absolute favourite article of clothing is his Superman cape. He wears it over everything from pajamas to his Sunday-best suit. A true superhero, he explains, always needs his cape so he is ready to be a hero. Without his cape a superhero cannot fly, a superhero is just a regular person.
I thought about that when I read verse 49: “so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” In other words, to be a superhero for Christ you need to have a cape. You need to be clothed in the Holy Spirit. Baptism transforms us from regular people to superheroes for Christ. We can accomplish feats that seem impossible.
What does a superhero really do? A superhero brings hope that things will be okay. A superhero brings joy where before there was only fear and sadness. Are you ready to be a superhero for Christ? You would be amazed at what one single, regular person can accomplish when they have the right cape on. Through baptism we have been given our cape-now all we have to do is fly.
Dear Lord, clothe us in the power of the Holy Spirit, equip us to be superheroes for Christ, and let us spread your message of hope and grace. Amen. — VB
