There is much more to the apostle Thomas than the “Doubting Thomas” label implies. Jesus never labelled him this. Labels are sticky, persisting generalizations that don’t come near describing the character of people, especially the total Christian character of this beloved disciple. In this case Thomas was labelled for one statement in time. He was sincere, most likely he wanted to protect his memory of his friend and leader. More aptly he could be named “Courageous Thomas” because he rallied the disciples to go with Jesus to Lazarus’ tomb. “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (John 11:16) Or, “Seeking Thomas.” “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” (John 14:5)

Teachers know students learn differently. I am a visual learner. I go online to videos when restoring a car. I think Thomas was a visual learner also. There was no video for him to watch of Jesus reappearing to the disciples. He wanted the true visual facts. If we were there, would we have believed this incredible news?

Thank you, Saviour, for seeing beyond labels others put on us and accepting us individually as we are. There is only one label for us that needs to stick and persist, "Christian"! Amen. — G&CW
