Royalty?

Have you ever anticipated meeting a special visitor and then been awed when they actually appeared? I am old enough to remember driving to Saskatoon to see Princess Elizabeth a short time before she became Queen Elizabeth. Awesome! But later, how hard to think of her as Queen!

For centuries God’s people had been waiting, anticipating the coming of the Messiah. So in Mathew’s record of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, he reminds his readers of that prophecy: “Look, your king is coming to you.”

But what a strange king-humble, mounted on a donkey, and not even a grown-up donkey, a colt, the child of a donkey, a baby donkey. Certainly not anyone’s idea of a royal carriage or even the fancy convertible Princess Elizabeth stood in and waved to us in Saskatoon.

World leaders and politicians often try to be humble, “one of the people.” It’s even more astounding that the almighty God supremely demonstrated that oneness with us in the lowly person of Jesus, yet also our King. So God in Christ really does meet us in our everyday concerns while still pointing us toward the lofty ideals of the King of all creation.

Look, your king is coming to you-even today!

Thank you, Lord of all, for your kingship of all. May your humility meet me in my concerns today and inspire me to your lofty ideals. Amen. — AAG
