Mary’s Song

I don’t know if Paul McCartney had this scripture in mind when he wrote the lyrics to his song, “Let It Be,” but his words certainly capture the character of Mary in the wake of the angel’s incredible announcement.

She was a simple teenager, without power or wealth or connections, without anything to prepare her for the daunting task to which God was calling her. She didn’t even have the basic requirement to be a mother-a husband-a fact Mary was quick to point out! But God saw into Mary’s heart and knew she had the right stuff. She trusted in God so deeply she was able to bear the shame of a “too soon” pregnancy. Her strong faith allowed her to raise Jesus well-versed in the Law and the Prophets. A loving mother, she taught her son to be a caring person. She had the forbearance to watch her son become both a teacher wise beyond his years and a prophet who turned the world upside-down. How she was strong enough to bear the sorrow of watching him betrayed by his own people and executed by the Romans, only God knows. But God knew?and Mary accepted the call.

God, when I am called to be strong and brave, may I be as trusting as Mary. Amen. — PDH
