"As for me, the LORD has led me on the way?" (verse 27)
Here’s a job description for you: choose a wife for your master’s favourite son, not any local woman, but one from his own country and family; a perfect girl, beautiful, loving, faithful and wise, for she was to be the mate of a rich and powerful man through whom God’s promise would be fulfilled.
Abraham’s servant had a daunting task! So what did he do? First he loaded up the camels with many fine gifts. Then he travelled a long distance to the land of Abraham’s ancestors. When he arrived in that place, he prayed for God’s guidance in choosing the right girl for Isaac.
What did he look for? He looked for a girl who offered hospitality-who showed a stranger kindness and gave him a cool drink, then offered to water his camels, too. Rebekah was beautiful, but she was also strong and capable. She was brave-enough to go out and meet a stranger-and was not intimidated by his apparent wealth. Most importantly, she knew the code of hospitality: that providing water, food and safety to travellers was an important value in a harsh environment. Abraham’s servant leaned on God and chose well.
God, help me always to look to you for guidance when I have a big decision to make. Amen. — PDH
