Monday February 20th, 2017 Luke 6:12-16
And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles. (verse 13)
I was that kid in school who dreaded team sports in gym class. I wasn’t athletic, a little chubby, and was always the last person picked for a team.
I’m grown up now, and I have had to choose people to work with to accomplish a goal set by management. I admit that whenever this situation presents itself, I flash back to how I felt being the last one picked in school. Ultimately, I need to think of who will work well together, bringing different strengths to the team to produce the best quality work.
Jesus prayed for God to provide the insight he needed to choose the apostles. Jesus needed to choose wisely, to include those who would form the church, the one who would deny him and the one who would betray him. Jesus needed all of them for their differing talents and roles that they would play. Those not chosen played an equally important role in becoming the church after Jesus was crucified and resurrected.
Whether you are chosen first, last or not at all, we all have an important role in life and in the life of the church.
God of wisdom, help us to see our strengths and use them to further the work of the church. Amen. — GB
