Friday February 17th, 2017 Psalm 119:33-40
?give me life in your ways. See, I have longed for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life. (verses 37,40)
There is a deep spiritual hunger in society today. A yearning for something that is greater than ourselves. We hear this in Psalm 119.
In today’s reading, the psalmist clearly recognizes that in God is life! One hears a longing, a yearning for a deeper closeness with God, for a greater awareness of the Spirit’s presence. In the art of Spiritual Direction, this is called a “holy longing.” The Celtic mystics called it “searching for the Beloved.” We recognize that our souls have been awakened with a longing for that which is truly life-giving!
Everything changes! Holy longing is about one’s stance in life, how one approaches everyday living. God no longer is something to be understood, but to be experienced. We move from the head to the heart in our understanding of God. We fall, well and truly, in love with God.
Loving God, in you is life! Grant me the grace of a holy longing that can be filled only by you. Amen. — MKW
