"I am the LORD your God ? showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments." (verses 1,6)
It has been said that all laws governing our legal system can be traced back to one or more of the Ten Commandments. These foundational laws show us not only how to live in right relationship with each other, but also how to be in right relationship with ourselves.
Undergirding all ten commandments is a solid foundation of love-love of God, love of others, love of self. We remember Jesus, on the night before his death, gathering his inner circle together and reminding them that people would recognize his community by the love they shared with one another.
Yes, we will fail miserably! We cannot “will” ourselves to obey God’s commandments. At times we will wound others, even as we have been wounded ourselves. And yet, each day we are invited to begin anew, to ask God for the grace of a more loving heart, a heart that is open to receive love, to allow it to wash over us and transform us, so that our own ability to love will blossom.
Loving God, source of all that is life-giving, grant me the grace of a loving heart so that I might share your love with all in my life's path. May I be a blessing to someone this day. Amen. — MKW
