A New Beginning

Our daughter was only three days old when my husband learned that his job was being relocated from the east coast to Ontario. I remember feeling a little sad and afraid. We were leaving familiar surroundings and supportive friends. Extra planning would be needed to travel with a young child.

Mary may have had similar feelings. She was already far from her family and now she was traveling even further. Egypt, once a place of slavery, would now be a place of safety for their family. Trusting in God, they packed quickly and left quietly into the dark landscape.

We can learn from their journey: life is easier if we travel with people we know and trust; in order to reach a new and better place, we may need to start from a sad or dark space; and God is always with us, loving and caring for us wherever life takes us.

God of new beginnings, we thank you that you care for us and guide us as we start a new year. Amen. — BLF
