How Good is Our Memory?

Often when we read the Old Testament, we get lament after lament from the Hebrew people. They get rescued from slavery but whine about this and that on their journey to the promised land, is perhaps the best example of this.

Sadly, it is not only the Hebrew people who are having trouble with their memory. Too often we take for granted that when things are going well for us it is our own doing, but when we need help we wonder where God is.

There are many ways to jog our memories of the gracious deeds of the Lord in our own lives. Journaling, daily devotions around something positive that has happened, telling someone else about it, making a list. And let us not just focus on the “big enchilada” kind of events. Let us remember that in some of the small ways God enters our lives we find some of the most gracious deeds of the Lord.

How will you recount the gracious deeds the Lord has blessed your life with this day, and to whom will you recount them?

Lord God, your presence in my life takes so many different forms. Help me to see your gracious presence in all things, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. — JKU
