We live in a society full of signs: traffic signs, street signs, signs that advertise. They are everywhere. Signs are there to give us information or directions about something that is coming ahead. They may tell us that an event is coming or that an action will happen.
We often ask God for signs: that our prayers are heard; that we are heading in the right direction; that we are doing the right thing. We ask for the sign but often we do not recognize it when it is given. We fail to follow the signs and often end up going in the wrong direction.
At this season of Advent, we are given a great sign: a young woman will bear a son and name him Immanuel, God is with us! This sign is telling us of a coming event, a glorious happening. No matter where we go or what we do, God is with us. This is truly a reason to wait with anticipation for the event that is coming, a truly great reason to celebrate the season.
Leading Lord, when for you and your guidance I pine, Help me to remember this glorious sign, That your grace is always mine. Amen. — BZ
