This day is for children. They dress up and parade around the neighbourhood in costumes, looking for candy. Parents are delighted when the weather is pleasant and the treats are nutritious. God has a different kind of eternal treat for each of us.
Jacob’s experience was frightening and very difficult physically. He did not realize his opponent was God. However, he was in for a surprise. God was merciful and Jacob walked away relatively unharmed, able to tell about his amazing experience.
As my sister and I sat by our father’s bedside, keeping vigil in his final hours, we carried the conversation, telling him how much we loved him, singing his favourite hymns, telling our favourite family stories, and praying as hard as we could that he wouldn’t have to struggle too long. Suddenly, Dad’s eyes opened wide to the full glory of God’s love and peace. We knew that at that moment, the sun rose for Dad in the light of the grace of our Lord and Saviour.
Our Father, which art in heaven, thank you for the presence of loved ones in our lives. We are grateful for the promise of your grace and the knowledge that we, too, shall see that perfect sunrise. Amen. — BLSO
