As For Me?

Jeremiah speaks in his own defence at his trial, instigated by the priests and prophets of the temple who did not like what Jeremiah was prophesying; namely, that unless they repent and turn back to God, God will destroy the temple and their city. The trial has a good outcome: the elders do not have Jeremiah put to death. This passage brings to mind another trial with a very different outcome, the trial of Jesus, which led to the verdict, “Crucify him.”

As we think about St. Simon and St. Jude today, my thoughts turn to all of the saints who have fought the good fight of faith for their God. I think of all of those who continue to speak God’s truth today, often in a hostile, uncertain world, where fellow human beings clamour for their death. I think and pray.

Lord, give me strength to speak your word whenever the need arises and keep me mindful of your silent willingness to die for me. Amen. — JB
