Tuesday October 18th, 2016 St Luke, Evangelist Luke 1:1-4;24:44-53
"?so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." (verse 49)
The resurrection has taken place and the disciples, having spent time with Jesus, know beyond a doubt that he is risen. They have eaten with him, touched him, and he has given them instructions for the future. In today’s reading Jesus shows how scripture indicated that “The Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations.” After these compelling words he tells them to “Wait.”
Wait for what? So they return to Jerusalem and there they spend time in the temple, waiting and praising and blessing God. They waited and were ultimately blessed with the coming of the Holy Spirit. We know what happened next because we have read the Book of Acts, but they didn’t know what form “the power from on high” would take or when it would come.
Are you waiting for something? Is waiting becoming difficult? God knows what you are waiting for and God will answer in God’s own time.
May you find blessing in the waiting times of life.
Dear Lord, sometimes waiting can seem so daunting. Give us the grace to wait for you and for your power. In Jesus' name. Amen. — REJ
